1. Check the device, region and carrier lock
Match your model number and purchase region against the provider’s current compatibility list. For iPhone, Apple says another carrier requires an unlocked device; check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock.
Apple separately documents mainland-carrier profiles and mainland-purchased iPhones. Those rules should not be used as a blanket rejection of overseas visitors’ travel eSIMs. Apple’s travel guide explicitly discusses worldwide prepaid data providers for China visitors.
For supported iPhones purchased in mainland China, Apple says eSIMs from non-mainland carriers cannot be installed while the phone is in mainland China. Check your exact model and follow Apple’s travel instructions before leaving or returning.

2. Install with a reliable connection
Nomad says to buy and install its China eSIM before entering mainland China, as it says new plans cannot be purchased there. Use reliable internet and save the plan instructions privately for offline access. Never post your activation QR code in a public support request.

3. Check what starts the clock
The selected Airalo China records state first supported network connection. Nomad’s China page says a plan automatically activates after 60 days from purchase if not activated sooner; some plans require manual activation. Follow your purchase confirmation rather than assuming all products start only on arrival.

4. Choose the travel data line on arrival
Select the travel eSIM for cellular data. Nomad instructs China users to enable roaming on that line. Check your home carrier’s charges before keeping the home line active, and review automatic data switching.

5. Check the missing details before paying
If you need a local number, SMS or laptop tethering, confirm these for the exact package. Our selected listings show data-only service and leave unverified hotspot policies explicit. Unlimited packages may reduce speed after a daily allowance; read each plan’s source details.

If the connection fails
Check the selected data line, remaining allowance, activation status and covered destination. Then follow the seller’s APN or network instructions. Contact provider support before removing the profile; ask whether it can be reinstalled. Keep your booking information available offline.
